Abstract: At the other end of Afro-Eurasia, the Mediterranean Basin is essentially an inversion of Island Southeast Asia ISA (figure 4.1). As its name suggests, this “sea in the middle of land” is almost entirely landlocked, a gigantic Atlantic embayment stretching almost 4,000 km eastward into the heart of Eurasia (although at 2.5 million km², it comprises less than 1 percent of the planet’s oceanic space).
