Abstract:	The looting of the Tam Ting caves in the Luang Prabang province of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos) provides a graphic example of the trade in illicit cultural property in South-East Asia. The sculptures in the caves underwent conservation and an inventory was compiled between 1992 and 1997. In 2010, as the extent of the looting became known, Tam Ting was listed on the World Monuments Watch. The full extent of the looting was determined in 2011, with some 666 sculptures missing. This case study provides empirical data that documents the unchecked illegal trade in cultural property in South-East Asia.
