Description: This landmark study of peasant agriculture, economics, demography, and social organization in northeast Thailand synthesizes data produced by a large interdisciplinary Japanese research team of which only fragmentary and preliminary findings were previously available in English. It includes valuable discussions of a number of central theoretical questions about peasants and their adaptive strategies. It examines constraints on agricultural intensification in a high risk environment and offers major new insights into the failure of rural development efforts in that region.
