Abstract:	Since 2012, a series of archaeological surveys has been conducted in the Van Don district in Quang Ninh Province which broadly encompasses archipelago of the Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam. The name of Van Don appears in historical records as a trading port and naval base camp said to have been located somewhere on these islands. The historical records illustrate that Van Don was thriving as an international trading port of Dai Vet over centuries. There was a naval battle offshore of Van Don during the 13th century Mongol Empire invasion. This battle was related to another famous battle on the Bach Dang River in 1288. The presence of Van Don is notable in terms of naval history, its role on the socioeconomic development of Dai Vet dynasties, and the modern Vietnamese identity in the north. Maritime archaeological approaches are presented to clarify the significance of Van Don within a research framework in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology.
