Abstract: To understand paleoenvironments, and the relationship between the environment and human life during the Oc Eo period c. 1,000 AD, four cores were taken at the Nhon Thanh, Go Thanh, Go Thap and Da Noi sites for purposes of palynological analysis. Preliminary results suggest that the flora consisted of tropical plants, with arboreal, herbaceous plants and ferns predominate. Sediment analysis results also revealed the influence of marine oscillations in the Mekong Delta through the distribution of mangrove pollen. The transition from a tidal environment with mainly mangrove pollen in the lower layers, to an alluvial plain environment consisting primarily of marsh plants in the upper part of the cores can be observed. The effect of initial settlement of ancient people was also recognized in the core via the presence of charcoal and pottery, most clearly at 30-40cm to 1m depth. It suggests that ancient people adapted to the change from a coastal to wetland environment. This paper presents the results of pollen analysis that provides baseline data for further palaeoenvironment study in this area.
