Abstract:	The paper presents new data gathered during site surveys and excavation by a Thai-French archaeological team between 2002 and 2005 at Khao Sam Kaeo, on the east coast of Peninsular Thailand. The area was first investigated by archaeologists of the Fine Arts Department of Thailand in the 1970s on account of bronze objects and beads found by local villagers. These earlier studies and theoretical issues underlying the present research are discussed. The newly excavated material as well as that dug by local villagers provides important evidence for early inter-regional exchange both with South Asia and around the South China Sea. On the basis of stone and glass waste material, Khao Sam Kaeo appears to have been a manufacturing centre for semi-precious glass and stone ornaments. A number of radiocarbon dates provide a firm basis for dating the site.
