Abstract:	Recent (2003) excavation of cave sites in Peñablanca, Cagayan Province, northern Luzon has yielded red-slipped earthenware sherds and sherds from black vessels. This paper presents a comparison of these earthenwares, dated to 3500-1500 BP, with those from Cagayan Valley sites (3800-1800 BP) in terms of vessel form, surface finishing and ceramic petrography. The results point to the possible exchange of ceramic vessels from the lowland Austronesian communities to upland cave dwelling hunter and gathering peoples 3500 years ago. The paper also presents an alternative ceramic chronology for Cagayan Valley to that proposed by Ogawa (2002c).
