Abstract:	Landfall sites are discussed in the Aceh Besar and Aceh Utara regions of the Indonesian province of Aceh at the north-western tip of the island of Sumatra. The region, located as it is along the Sumatra fault line that extends from Java up to the Andaman and Nicobar islands, is inherently geologically unstable but does not appear to have been affected by such violent tectonic action within the past two thousand years before the violent earthquake and tsunami of 26th December 2004 at least, there do not appear to have been any folk memories of violent wave action affecting coastal communities in the area and archaeological evidence for such an occurrence is not yet forthcoming.
