Abstract:	In 2003, the first season of archaeological investigations sponsored by the Swiss-Liechtenstein Foundation for Archaeological Research Abroad took place south of the Lake Kerinci in the highlands of Sumatra. Excavations and surveys revealed new material on the early settlement structure of this region. Pottery finds are instructive in providing a sequence to compare it with material from other places in Sumatra. The excavation at one of Kerinci's megalithic sites documented a big house next to the stone monument, which can be dated to the 12th-14th centuries AD. Other objects found at this place illustrate aspects of exchange with i.e. the kingdoms of Srivijaya and Melayu in the lowlands Sumatra. The implications of the Kerinci finds are considered in their regional contexts, and their contribution to understanding cultural formation processes in the highlands of Sumatra.
