Abstract: There are four key cities in the early traditional histories of Myanmar: Tagaung, Beikthano, Vishnu and Sriksetra. While there are many other walled sites associated with the first to ninth century Pyu culture, it is these four that provided the legitimating lineage of the ninth century Bagan dynasty. It has long been thought that Vishnu City played a pivotal role in the acceleration of technology, the consolidation of religious hierarchies and the process of urbanization in the early first millennium AD.
