The transition to history in Thailand and Southeast Asia is still relatively poorly understood, especially from archaeological perspectives. This topic is investigated through archaeological test excavations at Promtin Tia, a multi-component site located in the Lopburi Area's undulating terrain of central Thailand. This stratified site contains deposits dating to late prehistoric periods (Bronze and Iron Ages) and historic period (Dvaravati Period), thus providing a good example for the study of cultural change in the Lopburi Area in particular and in mainland Southeast Asia in general. This paper presents new data from recent investigations with particular reference to cultural chronology, settlement pattern, and trade and exchange system.
