Abstract:	Research among the vast manuscript archives in Laos and Northern Thailand reveals examples of what can be called 'homilies'. The nissaya, sadda and vohāra texts composed between the sixteenth and mid-twentieth centuries demonstrate a popular form of literature that was used as written guides to oral homilies. These are sermons given on ritual occasions and which involve the exegesis and glossing of Pali texts. This paper applies some of the insights of historians of religions to the study of the earliest sermons found in Buddhist South East Asia through a detailed explication of different versions of the Lao Kammavācā Nissaya Sadda.
