Abstract:	The rich literary tradition of Laos, which dates back to the 15th and 16th century AD, has been endangered by recent historical circumstances and is especially threatened by the impact of modernization and global cultural changes. This paper focuses on a Lao-German cooperation project, the Preservation of Lao Manuscripts Programme, the main objectives of which are to help the Lao PDR physically preserve its national literary heritage and to revitalise public awareness of its value. The impact of the programme far exceeded physical manuscript preservation, and has made a major contribution to the sustained safeguarding of this important literary heritage.
