Abstract:	This paper aims to study the beginning of the reconstruction of the town of Vientiane under French colonial rule in the last years of the 19th century. It deals with the historical context and the various problems that arose when the French built their administrative centre. The Lao capital, sacked by the Siamese in 1828, was gradually rebuilt, after the clearing of the existing structures: the palace, city wall and temples. French concepts of space, based on order, regularity and monumentality, were superimposed on the spatial configurations of the ancient Lao town.
