Reviews the current understanding concerning the relationship between nutrition and physical activity between the ages of 1-10 years. Defines what is undernutrition and overnutrition in children and discusses how, when sufficiently severe, are both associated with low levels of physical activity. In undernutrition, the level of physical activity appears to increase with increases in energy intake. At present heart-rate monitoring combined with observations probably provides the most useful information overall. Authors makes the point that there still is no clear understanding of how social, cultural, and environmental differences affect the physical activity of children. What is clear is that the level of physical activity in children is a biocultural phenomenon and needs to be approached in that way.
