The most ancient bronze drums were organic components and integral part of Dongsonian culture. Therefore they could be given the name of Dong Son drums. their first upholders were Lac Viet, i.e. Proto Viet or Archaic Viet. Bronze drums are a symbol, a projection of ancient Viet's mentality. it is not that of the dwellers in a « totemist society » as understood by certain archaeologists of yesteryears. Theis owners were also not « sailors in the high sea ». Bronze drums reflect the mentality of an agricultural population growing wet rice in the delta with farming rites under the influence of Chamanism of Central Asian steppes.
