| Abstract: | Nutritional stress can be caused by increased energy demands or inadequate caloric intake. Paper provides a framework for examining the role of disease in energy balance in children and three examples of disease-energy balance interactions. Resting and Total Energy Expediture (REE and TEE) and growth and body composition were measured. Small body size for age and reduced physical activity are responses to undernutrition that have been noted in children. These issues are conpounded though since children already have higher energy demands for growth, have maturing immune system, and mental demands. [This statement seems to be contridicted in Dufour (1997).] |
