In December 2002, an archaeological excavation took place at 18 Hoàng Diệu Street whose initial aim was to retrieve artefacts and release the land for the construction of a new National Convention Centre and National Assembly Building. The work was assigned to the Institute of Archaeology (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences), which was given approximately nine months to complete its excavation of an area estimated at 48,000 m2. The archaeologists, led by the institute’s vice-director Tống Trung Tín, were able to excavate 2,000 m2 in the project’s first phase. Preliminary results from this small area revealed rich architectural vestiges from different historical periods: Đại La, Lý, Trần and Lê.
