Abstract:	Vietnamese memories of Thăng Long Imperial Citadel are surprisingly vague. The ‘splendid and sumptuous palaces’ mentioned in ancient texts are no more than ornate and formulaic words of praise: they give no indication of the old buildings’ size and appearance. In the Vietnamese mind, however, Thăng Long Imperial Citadel conjures up the image of a golden age of prosperous dynasties building an enduring civilisation. The great events of the nation’s history are all closely linked to the royal capital at Thăng Long and the citadel was the capital’s heart, a place of assembly for dignitaries and men of note from throughout the northern region.
