Abstract:	This ambitious book is intended as an introductory text; it assumes no previous knowledge about Southeast Asia. The author offers ‘a decentered world regional history’ focusing on Southeast Asia, with such a strong emphasis on the links between this region and East Asia that some such term as ‘East-Southeast Asia’ is called for to encompass it. South Asia and the Indian Ocean are frequently alluded to, but ‘it was China through its age-old Tributary Trade Networks that provided the essential stability and continuity enabling a brilliant age of commerce’ (p. xiii).
