Abstract:	Volume One of this work, published in 1988, received highly favourable reviews. In the opinion of this reviewer, while the first volume is certainly useful, the concluding volume is much more exciting and worthy of high praise. "Expansion and Crisis" assays an adventurous search for new perspectives. Some new paradigms advanced here are likely to leave an important and lasting legacy for future historians; others are likely to stimulate the search for new analytic frameworks. Because the book contains an exemplary blend of data and analysis, it will serve as a resource for scholars in several fields in addition to history. Region-wide syntheses of Southeast Asia by individual authors are becoming rare; this one may be the last by a historian of any stature for time to come.
