Abstract:	The author of this volume was a member of the Borobudur restoration consultative committee from 1971 to 1983, and worked on the UNESCO project for the Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle from 1983 to 1987. These positions provided him with unique opportunities to become familiar with the ancient architecture of Southeast Asia. This breadth of observation is reflected in the wealth of illustrative material presented in this volume, which contains 165 figures and 333 photographic plates. The design and production of this volume are excellent, as are the other publications in this series. The drawings and photos are well reproduced, and a complicated layout has been executed without the mistakes such as mismatched captions and illustrations which still manage to dog many publications. The price of the book is no doubt high, but perhaps it is necessary to charge such an amount to attain this level of quality, now rare in an age of mass reproduction. The translation of the book into English from the Japanese original in general seems quite serviceable.
