Abstract:	This volume is a competent summary of what has been written about Jakarta, and will be of interest to non-specialists. It does not however attempt to add a new perspective to our knowledge of the subject. It does not develop strong overall themes or define a character for the city. The latter objective might be impractical, but the former might include such topics as Islam, immigration, acculturation, and commerce. Another useful research project would compare Jakarta to other urban centres in Indonesia, and attempt to define the nature of Indonesian urbanism.
