The author reviews the concepts of researchers about the dates of Hoa Binh culture, though being different, they have been converged into three main comprehensions: the Hoabinhian belongs to upper Palaeolithic, Mesolithic or early Neolithic. It was also known that the Hoabinhian belongs to the pebble tool tradition, of which the prephase is the Sonvian, and the following successive are Bac Son, Da But . . . cultures. Thus to distinguish the Hoa Binh as a separate culture, the author has to base himself on the evolution classes of the main tool types of the Hoa Binh. Based on the stratigraphical, paleontologica,l technological, and typological data, the author put forward the view point that: there is a phase of Pre-Hoabinhian, which was containing the new-appeared cultural elements in the context of environmental changes, as the beginning step of the formation process of the real Hoabinhian the classical or developed Hoabinhian. The following phase is late Hoabinhian with the appearance of pottery and edgeground axes. Possibly, the Da But culture and other successive cultural forms Hoabinhian could be seen as the expression of the final end of the Hoa Binh as an archaeological culture. So the Hoa Binh culture was formed, developed, and lasted in a period from 12000 to 6000 years BP.
