Abstract:	Phylogenetic methods offer a powerful means of testing competing models of human dispersal using cultural datasets. Here we employ phylogenetic methods to test three main colonisation hypotheses for South Asia using data from 57 Palaeolithic stone tool assemblages. We show that the most parsimonious hypothesis is one in which modern humans left Africa prior to the Toba eruption with a Middle Stone technology comprising Levallois technology but lacking handaxes. Our results thus reject the hypothesis that Homo sapiens left Africa with classic Upper Palaeolithic technology that included backed microliths.
